Perfect Haitian English
I looked up and 3 young men
Were walking beside me
I would guess them to be 20 to 23 years of age
Even though they looked to be
Only 15 by American standards.
We would walk 20 steps
They would turn their heads,
Stare at me and smile
As we walked.
I'd look back at them and they would quickly look away
We'd walk some more
Then before long they would stare again
I'd look at them and smile, they would again quickly look away
And we'd walk some more.
After a while the silence bothered my Americanisms
I was compelled to start making polite conversation
I had long sense run out of things to say
Since I don't speak Creole
Thankfully the young people always want to practice their English
But there are only so many
Hello, how are you, what is your name conversations
That one American can do in a day
I asked in my perfect American English,
“What would it take to fix Haiti? To make Haiti perfect”
Without missing a beat,
One of the young men said,
In perfect
Haitian English
“Jesus”
We walked that last mile to the compound
Without staring, smiling or
Saying another word.
